The fate of Julius Jones now rests in Governor Kevin Stitt's hands as he's set to be executed on Thursday. This weekend, hundreds gathered in support of Jones.

"What are we as a society to kill an individual," said Rep. Jason Lowe. "To murder an individual."

Jones was convicted of the murder of Edmond businessman Paul Howell in 1999.

Earlier this month, the Pardon and Parole Board voted to recommend clemency for Jones. The board also recommended a commutation of his sentence to life with parole.

It's now up to Governor Kevin Stitt to make the final decision, whether to carry out the execution. Those in Jones' camp are hopeful that the decision will go in his favor.

"To know the facts," said a Jones advocate. "To listen to the voice of God, and to do the right thing, we must as Oklahomans get this right."

The rally comes just days after the 10th circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Jones and three other death row inmates, who wanted their executions to put on hold. Their attorneys wanted the executions to stay until a ruling was made in a legal battle challenging Oklahoma's lethal injection protocol.

For the Howell family, they say it's been a difficult process.

"We will go through this year after year after year," said Megan Howell Tobey, Paul's sister. "It will never end."

Supporters of Paul Howell said in a statement just last week, his family met with Governor Stitt and his team to discuss the Pardon and parole boards recommendation.

"We are saddened that our tragedy has been used by so many that choose to assume without any fact-checking whatsoever the worst of jurors, law enforcement, and the prosecutors," said Brian Howell, Paul's brother.

News 9 will have team coverage on Thursday and keep an updated on any decision made by the governor throughout the week.
