Penn Square Mall was the scene of a metro family's nightmare. A driver hit their grandmother and sent her to the hospital.

Police said the driver hit Maria Rodriguez and a family member on Friday. Three days later, Rodriguez is still in critical condition.

“She went over to her grandma and started hollering at her, trying to get her to wake up because she was unresponsive,” said Tammie Caporal, Rodriguez’s daughter-in-law.

“One person was driving through the parking lot, an elderly gentleman, and at some point, the front of his vehicle struck a couple of pedestrians that were there in the parking lot,” said Oklahoma City police Sgt. Dillion Quirk.

Police said 92-year-old Otto Borden hit 65-year-old Maria Rodriguez and her granddaughter with his car outside this Dillard's at Penn Square Mall.

“It hit her on the side and kind of knocked her out of the way and she fell unconscious. She said when she woke up that her grandma was laying on the ground and she had blood coming out of her head,” said Caporal.

“One of the pedestrians sustained a pretty significant injury and she was taken to an area hospital,” said Quirk.

Rodriguez is at OU Health, and her family said they are praying for a miracle.

“She’s in ICU and she is not doing well,” said her daughter-in-law.

The family is calling for an arrest of the driver.

“Even accidents have consequences, and he should have consequences. This man is out there living his best life while she is in here fighting for hers,” said Caporal.

Police said the 92-year-old driver was not injured.
