As chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush, Gen. Powell helped lead the successful campaign in the 1991 Gulf War. A decade later, as President George W. Bush’s Secretary of State, Powell played a key role in the nation’s invasion of Iraq.

The cause of death was complications from COVID-19, according to his family. Powell had been treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., his family added, noting he had been fully vaccinated.

In a statement, President Biden said Powell “embodied the highest ideals of both warrior and diplomat. He was committed to our nation’s strength and security above all. Having fought in wars, he understood better than anyone that military might alone was not enough to maintain our peace and prosperity.”

Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe said in a statement that he and his wife Kay are deeply saddened at Powell’s passing.

“His, was a life marked by distinguished service to the nation — first in uniform, then as a diplomat and public servant. I always appreciated General Powell’s perspective and how he prioritized his long-standing relationships with Congress even when there were differences of opinions.”
