An unregistered sex offender was arrested after police said he was looking through windows at an apartment complex for seniors.
Russell Haddock, 59, was arrested by Stillwater police on August 12.
Officers first responded to reports of a peeping tom at Legacy Park Apartments on August 11.
“The officer goes and talks to the witnesses and the victim,” Stillwater Police Lt. Kyle Bruce said. “(They were) told that a couple nights before he (officer) was there, one of their neighbors saw an individual peeping in their area outside their windows.”
Officers were unable to track Haddock down but days later, police said neighbors spotted Haddock peeping through resident’s windows again.
This time responding officers were able to locate Haddock.
“During the conversation they were able to determine that he had an outstanding Payne County warrant, and he was taken into custody,’ Bruce said.
Officers said they found meth on Haddock, who was not registered to be living at the apartment complex.
In an interview the next day, police learned Haddock was living at the complex and was helping care for his ill mother.
“During the interview, he (Haddock) admitted to peeping through the windows and later found out he was a sex offender that wasn’t registered to live where he was at,” Bruce said.
Stillwater police said neighbors provided a solid description of the suspect and even pointed officers to where he was staying.
“Sometimes nosy neighbors are good neighbors,” Bruce said. “That’s what keeps us safe and that’s what keeps us protected sometimes (are) those neighbors that are out there and are paying attention that something is not normal.”
Haddock is behind bars in Payne County on a $30,000 bond.
