Enid Police Warn Public About Rise In Auto Burglaries

Enid officers are looking for a family's heirlooms stolen out of a vehicle. They told News 9 this family is one of many victims in a new trend of vehicle burglaries.

“We tend to see an increase in vehicle burglaries during the summer months, especially the summer months. It is only amplified by the fact that people are leaving their valuables in their vehicles,” said Cass Rains with the Enid Police Department.

The owner, who didn’t want to go on camera, said these pieces of jewelry meant the world to her. They were passed down from her grandmother and she wants them back.

In the month of June Enid Police worked 29 auto burglaries, in over half of those cases the people left their doors unlocked.

“You need to have identifiers, serial numbers, something that can prove that it is yours,” said Rains.

From there police can enter your lost items into a system and notify local pawn shops to keep an eye out.

A pawn shop manager told News 9 they work hand in hand with police departments to identify jewelry and other stolen items.

“A unique identifier that is to that item exponentially increases our chances of being able to recover it,” said Rains.

The best thing to do is lock your car doors and take out valuable items that give thieves a reason to break in.

“Most likely it will take some sort of tip from the public to help us find out who did this,” said Rains.
