Citizens are collecting supplies to help relaunch Webster High School's golf program.
The head golf coach, Kirk Baker, is trying to get enough supplies for 20 kids before the season starts.
"I came here seven years ago and when we had budget cuts, we had to drop golf a few years and luckily we were able to pick it back up this year,” Baker said.
However, before the program can begin in August, Baker said they need supplies.
“Golf balls, golf bags, our school is a high poverty school, and a lot of our kids are homeless,” Baker said.
Baker will host practices next to the school's athletic facility and also at the Page Belcher Golf Course a few miles away. Yesterday, Baker said used Facebook to ask the community for help to get these kids what they need.
“It blew up within 15 minutes after putting something on Facebook,” Baker said.
Daniel Webster Alumni Foundation President, Donna Savage, shared Baker's post on the alumni's Facebook page. She said she's blown away by the support for the students.
"I think anything that gets the students out in fresh air, getting them to participate and learn is very important,” Savage said.
Tournaments start in December, and Baker said he has no doubt these kids will do great.
Our kids have tough lives, and I think having the opportunity to play golf will take their mind off that,” Baker said.
If you would like to provide Baker with golf supplies, contact the school at 918-746-8000.
