The only all-girls, tuition-free school currently running in the state is in Tulsa – and they’re wanting more students.

School leaders are accepting applications right now, with a plan to welcome thirty 6th grade girls and grow from there.

"We wanted to be able to provide private school advantages for children in North Tulsa," said Joanna Shrewsbury with Crossover Preparatory Academy.

Staff members here at Crossover Preparatory Academy are preparing for a new chapter in the school's history.

"Our heart is that as we lead in this capacity, that we would become a community school," said Assistant Principal of Crossover Preparatory Patrice Henry.

"All of the faculty that is here, they want to be involved in the students' lives. They want to invest in the next generation in such an intentional way. I just feel like I get to be a part of a school that I want for my children," said Shrewsbury.

Crossover provides a private, Christian, tuition-free education for Tulsa boys right now and now they are accepting applications for their all-girls school opening in the fall of 2021.

"Not only can we provide the quality of a private school education but with Crossover we can make it tuition free," said Shrewsbury. "That is an opportunity that some families want, and we don't want them to have to drive to South Tulsa to get that. We feel like we can provide that in their neighborhood."

Employees said they designed this process to be a space where education is a team effort. That is the philosophy at the boys’ school, and it will be at the girls’ school as well.

"Here at Crossover, we follow the student leadership model, so the idea is that, the students are actually running the school. In the morning when we have convocation, it is the students taking attendance, it is the students calling each other to find out why you aren't here because we do school together," said Shrewsbury.

Applications are open for sixth grade girls to apply.

"We are not trying to take the best students academically, we are not trying to gather up all the athletes in the community, we are just taking people who want to be at Crossover Prep, who want to have their child in an environment like this,"  said Shrewsbury.
