Wednesday is the first day of school for Deer Creek, with half of the students in the district attending in-person classes Wednesday and the other half Thursday.
Masks are required and thanks to an Edmond dentist's office the middle school will be well-stocked.
“It's kind of a no-brainer in times like right now when people need help,” said Santa Fe Dental Dentist Dr. Ryan Flake.
Most people wouldn't describe spending $6,000 on masks as a no-brainer, especially a business that had to shut down for two months, but the four partners at Santa Fe Dental all chipped in to buy 1,200 masks, enough for every student and staff member at Deer Creek Middle School.
"I enjoy helping people and this was just another way to help people,” said Dr. Mike Hansen of Santa Fe Dental.
Hansen came up with the idea for the mask donation. He and Flake hand delivered the masks last week to a very happy principal.
"Our school colors, our mascot, so everyone feels really proud to get to wear the masks, so we just feel so special just to be remembered,” said Deer Creek Middle School Principal Kristy VanDorn.
And now Hansen is hoping his donation has a domino effect.
"We thought, how cool would it be if other local businesses would kind of band together and do the same thing?”
If you'd like to help by making a PPE donation, Santa Fe Dental has offered to help facilitate the process with the mask manufacturer they worked with.
