Oklahoma City Public Schools along with other school districts are set to restart athletics beginning on June 8.
The specifics of each phase and how it will look will vary by each district.
Oklahoma City area-school districts will follow a proposal by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.
Local school administrators say they will use different phases to ensure the safety of everyone.
“We take it one day at a time, we start June 8,” said Todd Dilbeck, district athletic director for Oklahoma City Public Schools. “We’ve got some protocols in place for when we have kids working out, two kids to a station only.”
According to Oklahoma City Public Schools, phase 1 will be from June 8 to the 26. It will include weight lifting and weight training.
Phase 2 will start July 5 and last until 15. During this time, team camps, skills and techniques sessions will be allowed.
Phase 3 which is set to start July 15 will allow all fall sports teams to hold unrestricted practices.
Dilbeck said keeping certain student athletes in the same workout groups will help them keep track of everyone’s health.
“We’re asking our coaches to try and keep the same workout groups together,” said Dilbeck. “That way you know who’s around each other, you sort of identify those athletes.”
Mustang Public Schools have similar guidelines, but will begin full team activities as soon as June 15. These activities will stay on their campus.
“There’s no way we were ever going to open back up Mustang Public Schools without guidelines in place without restrictions in place,” said Robert Foreman, director of athletics for Mustang Public Schools. “Part of our plan is to control our athletes to our campuses this summer.”
Foreman emphasized that there will be a pre-workout screening, meaning all coaches and students should be screened daily for signs and symptoms of COVID-19. He said following these guidelines is key for everyone involved..
Edmond Public Schools also released its plan for resuming athletic programs. Student athletes will begin phase 1 outdoor workouts on June 11 and will last until 26.
