WEBBERS FALLS, Okla. (AP) -- The state Department of Public Safety is ordering police in Webbers Falls to stop writing speeding tickets to motorists on Interstate 40.

Mayor Jewell Horne says the Muskogee County town received the order two days before Christmas. Horne declined further comment.

Authorities say the order is the result of an investigation of complaints by motorists.

A 2003 state law gives the state authority to stop local police from enforcing traffic laws on state highways if it's determined a town gets more than half its operating revenue from the traffic tickets.

In recent weeks the towns of Caney in Atoka County and Moffett in Sequoyah County were also ordered to stop enforcing traffic laws on US highways. And Stringtown in Atoka County has been approved for speed-trap designation but no action has been taken against the town.
