A group of pet lovers are focused on stopping the pet overpopulation problem in Oklahoma City, by spaying or neutering the animals. They said they're new clinic offers low costs and high quality treatment for the working poor.

"The surgery at the vet was going to cost $250, and we couldn't pay for that," cat owner Jennifer Kinsman said. "So it was find an alternative, or get rid of the cat."

The operation that stops reproduction is the only thing these spay and neuter advocates believe makes a difference.

"For so long it's been ‘rescue, rescue, rescue,' and rescue doesn't work because there's never going to be enough homes," Dr. Terry Yunker said. "You can't rescue enough animals."

In just over two years at the SPOT clinic, they've fixed nearly 11,000 animals.

"Most people find adoption and rescue warm and fuzzy, and they're all behind that," SPOT clinic spokeswoman Karen Brady said. "When you start talking about spay and neuter, people don't find that warm and fuzzy therefore it's really hard to get funding."

The SPOT clinic functions solely on donations and grants, all in an effort to decrease pet suffering, and give pet owners back happier and healthier dogs and cats.

"I love my kitties. I have six of them," Kinsman said. "I don't know what I would do if I had to get rid of axle."
