LUTHER, Okla. -- Police believe a 14-year-old boy accidentally shot his 12-year-old friend in the head Monday evening while the two played with a handgun, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office said.
The 12-year-old boy was spending the night at his 14-year-old friend's house, located on E. Memorial Rd. just east of Luther, when a .22 caliber revolver handgun they were playing with fired. A bullet hit the 12-year-old boy in the head, Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel said.
The boy was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived, authorities said. They tried to revive the child until he was transported by helicopter to the OU Medical Center. He underwent surgery Monday evening and was still listed in critical condition Tuesday morning.
"It's sad because those kids are just cute little kids, real sweet," family member Andrea Manwell said. "They went to our church and you know, it's just awful when you hear something like that."
No adults were present during the time of the shooting which by law could lead to charges, according to News 9 legal analyst Irvin Box.
"It simply says, if you do not give the adequate supervision to a child under 18 years of age, that you could be charges with child neglect," Box said.
No names have been released.
