ENID, Okla. -- The Enid Police Department is investigating a stabbing that took place Monday.
Officers responded to an emergency call to The Red Barn, a local tavern, at 909 W Oak and found 41-year-old Johney Grant Atherton bleeding from several stab wounds and unresponsive.
Police said before Atherton lost consciousness he told witnesses he was stabbed by his estranged wife, 39-year-old Melissa Annett Atherton of Pond Creek.
Melissa Atherton was later taken into police custody on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon due to evidence found at her residence that linked her to the assault of Johney Atherton.
Investigators also found a substance believed to be illegal narcotics as well as drug paraphernalia during the search.
According to police, no motive has been established.
Johney Atherton was taken to Bass Hospital with critical wounds to the neck, heart and lower side near his back, police said. He underwent emergency surgery Monday night and is in critical condition.
