OKLAHOMA CITY -- There's a reason why Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest, if not the busiest work day for plumbers.

Holiday weekends keep plumber Jeff Ragland busy.

"It's pretty chaotic sometimes," Ragland said.

He's been a plumber for 21 years and has pretty much seen it all.

"Really, most things that say that they're flushable, you really can't take that at face value," Ragland said.

The number one Thanksgiving problem is back near the kitchen counter, inside the sink.

"Ninety-five percent of the time, right around the holidays, it's drain problems," Ragland said.

Ragland said they are usually preventable by not putting certain things down the pipe.

"Anything fibrous. Artichoke hearts, celery, too many potato peels," Ragland said.

When too much of that goes down the disposal, chances are the homeowner will have a problem, in which case Jeff advices to hit the button on the bottom.

"Try resetting it," Ragland said.

If that doesn't work, try inserting a one quarter-inch Allen wrench in the center.

"You can spin the disposal a lot of times working it back and forth," Ragland said. "That will unseize the disposal."

Many who can't solve the problem will be joining a long line of others who will call a plumber like Ragland from Tipton's to help. It's a 24/7 job, and he'll know what to expect when he sees the customers.

"Sometimes I get called out in the middle of dinner, but that goes with the territory as a plumber," Ragland said.

Those who call a plumber for help on a holiday can except to pay the holiday pay.
