OKLAHOMA CITY - Centennial High School students and staff have been evacuated to the gym after a student inadvertently knocked the head off of a fire sprinkler, according to the Oklahoma City Fire Department.
Fire officials responded to the loud alarm at the school on N.E. 101st Street and Kelly Avenue around 12:30 p.m.
Machine oil was released along with water from the pipe, since the sprinklers have not been used since the school was built. The pungent odor from the machine oil caused some students and faculty to get headaches.
Hazmat was on scene to help check the substance. The area around the spill was evacuated but the oil is not toxic, although the smell is difficult to tolerate.
Fire officials are cleaning up the scene and will not let students and staff back into the affected area until the oil and water is cleaned up.
