Wayman Tisdale Dies After Battle with Cancer

Wayman Tisdale, a former OU three-time All American and NBA veteran, has lost his battle with cancer, his family said.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Wayman Tisdale, a former OU three-time All American and NBA veteran, has lost his battle with cancer, his family said.

The 44-year-old lost his two year battle with cancer 8 a.m. Friday.

He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and lost his leg to bone cancer in 2008. He was equipped with a prosthetic and continued to fight the disease, becoming an advocate for others also battling cancer.

Tisdale was active in the community, and promoted the arrival of the Oklahoma City Thunder. He said he knew Oklahoma could support the franchise.

Wayman Tisdale was honored by the team, as they presented him with the Thunder Community Hero Award.

He was also known for his musical abilities, releasing several CDs.

Tisdale spent seasons in the NBA with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.

Tisdale is survived by his wife Regina and their four children. 

ESPN Classic is honoring Tisdale's life by replaying two of his memorable OU games tonight at 7 and 9 p.m.

The first game will be the Oklahoma vs. Louisiana Tech game from March 21, 1985. Tisdale hit a six-foot jumper with three seconds remaining in overtime to give Oklahoma its victory in the Midwest Regional Semifinal NCAA Tournament Game.

The second game will be the Jan. 28, 1983 game against Oklahoma State in which both Tisdale and David Little scored 22 points to forge an 81-80 Sooner victory.
