KINGFISHER, Oklahoma -- Lifetime registered sex offender Matthew Mallory is back behind bars in Oklahoma after being transported Monday from Texas.
Both he and his 14-year-old niece Ariel Mallory were captured outside San Antonio Texas last week. They had been on the run for 6 days.
Kingfisher County deputies transported the two in separate cars from San Antonio to Kingfisher. Deputies confirm Ariel Mallory was taken to a juvenile facility and is in protective custody.
They also tell us she was quiet on the ride up and was reading a Harry Potter book.
Deputies transporting Matthew Mallory say he did not give them any trouble on the ride up. However, he tried to shield his face with the book" Purpose Driven Life" when being walked into the Kingfisher County Jail and told reporters to "f--- off, put that on the news" while being led in.
Mallory continued to dodge reporter questions as he was led into the jail, but said the reason he ran was because he could.
Mallory and his niece had been on the run for almost a week before they were spotted and captured near San Antonio, Texas.
Surveillance cameras captured images from a nearby Walmart last weekend. And the two were finally apprehended a day later.
"He just said they panicked and they ran," said Deputy David Lanman.
Deputy David Lanman runs the sex offender registry for Kingfisher County and knows Mallory all to well. He says he was surprised when Matthew and Ariel went on the lamb.
"He's always been real cooperative with me and I've never had any problems with him. Prior to this incident he's been in full compliance with state law and what he needs to be doing," he said.
Lanman says he'd heard rumors about the incestuous relationship Mallory was having with his niece, but says Ariel would never admit to it.
Now Mallory faces a string of new charges. And deputies say this is one sex offender who probably can't be rehabilitated.
"There's something wrong in the first place that draws them to this kind of act and its not just a random act. Its thought out and planned and that's the way these things usually play out," Lanman said.
Matthew Mallory faces a string of charges including failure to register as a sex offender, abandoning a child, and 5 counts of child sexual abuse. Mallory had served time in prison once before for raping a 15-year-old girl.
The Kingfisher District Attorney says the investigation remains open and anticipates more charges could be filed.
