NORMAN, Oklahoma -- For years visitors to Campus Corner in Norman have not been required to feed the parking meters on Saturday--even though they're legally required to.

But a few Saturdays back Norman police did issue a few citations on expired meters. The police were responding to some overall parking concerns expressed by the Campus Corner Merchants Association.

Several merchants didn't know it was going to happen, and they weren't happy about it.

"I've been seeing people getting tickets and not expecting them," says Nancy Russell at Cookies 'n Cards. "And that's $10 we wanted them to spend on Campus Corner.

But the President of the Campus Corner Merchants Association, Jeff Stewart said not enforcing the meters on Saturdays creates other problems for customers.

"You can come down here early in the day, and there are already quite a few vehicles here before 10 a.m., which we believe to be primarily employees and/or Saturday students," Stewart said.

Merchants have created more than 300 free spaces for customers and employees in lots off the street.

Norman police are soliciting feedback about the Saturday enforcement before they try it again.

People with comments about the Saturday parking enforcement can call Norman Police Capt. Todd Gibson at 405-217-7706.
