It's been five months since that big May storm sparked a fire that nearly destroyed the Red Rock Canyon Grill. Monday, the restaurant will be back open for business.
It was originally thought that lightening had started the fire, but now, the owners of Red Rock say it was hail that broke a neon light that arched and caught the shake shingles on fire.
The night of May 29, the roof of the popular Lake Hefner restaurant was glowing with flames that Hank Kraft started seeing as he drove from Edmond.
"As I got here, it got bigger and bigger and the fire trucks were everywhere," said Hank Kraft, VP of Hal Smith Restaurant Group who owns Red Rock.
Kraft says the fire did about a million dollars' worth of damage, much of that due to water and smoke on the inside.
So the entire restaurant had to be gutted and then redone, which means the owners added some new touches along the way. That includes, lighter wood, sound absorbing materials, the wine room is now refrigerated, and anyone can enjoy the outdoor patio anytime.
"We added the garage doors, we added heat and air out here, so we now have this room year round and the weather will never bother us," Kraft said.
Earlier Monday, workers put on the finishing touches. And barely five months after the massive fire, the welcome mat is now out once again, and the kitchen is open for business.
Another improvement, new composite shingles that are fire resistant. And when you come back, you will notice that the staff is the same.The insurance company paid all of their salary's these past five months.
