An Edmond firefighter who battled a deadly form of colon cancer for nearly five years has died.
The Edmond Fire Department confirmed Captain John Werhun, 42, died Saturday morning. He was a captain at Edmond Fire Station 1 for eight years, and a firefighter in Edmond for 19 years.
On April 2, News 9 profiled Werhun as the community rallied behind him. Fellow firefighters and 911 dispatchers had begun an effort to raise money for his wife and two teenage daughters. The Werhun Family Fund is established at all Citizens Banks in Edmond and Oklahoma City.
Werhun's co-workers said he constantly displayed courage and positivity during his battle.
No details about funeral services have been released.
