A metro mother says she can thank her own son for saving her life at a local waterpark.
“I went under and I couldn't tell top from bottom,” said Karen Burston about her scare weeks ago at the wave pool at White Water Bay in NW OKC. “I made my peace and I reached up one last time.”
Burston learned the person who grabbed her hand and pulled her to the shallow end was her own 8-year-old son.
“I had no idea he could do that,” she said.
As it turns out, her son isn't a strong swimmer.
“On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm about a 4,” admitted Malachi Burston, now 9 years old.
Malachi and his family were given four free passes from White Water Bay and a lifeguard whistle after the incident. The family is celebrating his birthday again, on Labor Day, at the park. They say the first one wasn't much of a celebration because of the drowning scare.
“It's going to feel weird, but at least we aren't going to the wave pool,” said Malachi.
White Water Bay didn't want to comment on the incident.
