Something I came across while doing this story is a thing called "the cooling-off rule". Basically it means that if someone comes to your door selling something, you have 3 days to change your mind and get a refund. Also door to door salesman have to give you a dated receipt, name and address of the seller, and explain your right to cancel. They also have to give you 2 copies of a cancellation form.
If you feel like someone has violated this law, you can complain to the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-FTC-HELP.
