Stroud city leaders withdraw prison proposal

STROUD, Okla. - City leaders withdrew their proposal to build a private prison in Stroud before it could be approved by the school board.

School board members were scheduled to vote on the proposal Tuesday. State law requires the board's approval because the prison is slated to be built within one mile of four school campuses.

Superintendent Rick McDaniel said the city sent the board a letter Tuesday afternoon withdrawing their proposal.

The facility would be a medium-security prison with maximum security standards, officials said.

City Manager Steve Gilbert previously told NEWS 9 that if the school board voted against the proposed location, the city had another site for the prison.
