After six months of construction, Lake Hefner Dam Road is set to re-open on July 11, authorities said.
The road and trails across the dam were closed for erosion repair between Britton Rd. and Old Lakeshore Dr. since January 2. A re-opening ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on July 11 at the east end of the road.
"It was an important safety project that was in everyone's best interest," Oklahoma City's Utilities Director Marsha Slaughter said in a press release.
Some of the changes around the road are enhanced erosion protection on the lakeside of the dam, a 42-inch-tall cable guardrail between motorists and pedestrians and a newly paved road across the dam.
The erosion along the bank and under the road occurred over a number of years, but the damage and leaning guardrails worsened with the excessive rain a year ago. The project cost the city an estimated $1.9 million.
