If you're in debt call the Consumer Credit Counseling Service. They have certified counselors who can help you for free - and it's confidential.
If they help you with a debt management plan - where you pay CCCS and they pay your creditors - there is a cost. But at most I'm told it's 35 dollars a month. And they can save you money (and stress) in the long run.
Their number is 1-800-364-2227
Their website is www.cccsok.com
If you go with another company, check them out with the Better Business Bureau. 239-6081.
A reputable agency will help you with all your unsecured debts - not just credit cards.
They can also give advice on raising your credit score. Here's a few of their tips:
- Make sure you pay your bills in full and on time.
- Check your credit report once a year. It's free once a year if you go to www.annualcreditreport.com
- If you see a discrepency, dispute it... it's a good way to raise your score.
