Travel early Friday morning is expected to become extremely dangerous if not impossible. The agency has issued a dense fog advisory for all of southern Illinois until 4 a.m. Friday.
In northern Illinois, thunderstorms have begun to produce what is expected to be one to three quarters of an inch of heavy freezing rain and sleet. By morning, the area may see 14 inches of snow.
Chicago officials say more than 300 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport and 30 were canceled at Midway International Airport on Thursday, with some flights delayed up to two hours.
