COLLINSVILLE, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality is erecting a security fence around an old zinc smelter near Collinsville that is a federal Superfund site.

Heavy machinery operators cleared brush and workers sloshed through shin-deep water last week to set poles for the fence at the former Tulsa Fuel and Manufacturing facility, which closed more than 80 years ago.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and DEQ announced in December a $6.6 million plan for cleaning up heavy-metal contaminants at the TFM venue.

Contracting with a fence company, DEQ is extending 4,066 feet of the chain-link, barbed-wire barrier around a large segment of the perimeter.
