NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Ricky Fowler is near the top of the leader board after day one of the 2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
The championship is being hosted at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Fowler, an Oklahoma State golfer, fired a 3 under par 68. Fowler is two shots behind Nick Taylor with one round left in stroke play.
Nick Taylor, of Canada, fires a 31 on the first nine holes to help take the lead after day one.
Defending champion Jack Newman, of Des Moines, Iowa, shot a 7 over par 78, finishing 39th overall.
The second round of stroke play qualifying is scheduled to finish on Tuesday. The low 64 scorers will advance to the match play portion of the championship, which is scheduled to begin Wednesday.
