SALLISAW, Oklahoma -- A Fort Smith, Ark., resident accused killing an Oklahoma man during a robbery has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Sequoyah County District Judge Jeff Payton accepted the plea agreement from Fredrick Brewer and sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole in the Sept. 20 death of 67-year-old Ronald Fields.
Authorities say Brewer and his wife, Shannon, went to Fields' home to rob him. According to court records, Fredrick Brewer hit Fields in the head with a hammer and cut his throat with a knife.
Officials say the couple took cash and some guns. Shannon Brewer is scheduled to be formally arraigned April 11.
Fredrick Brewer's attorney, Peter Astor, told the Southwest Times Record that Brewer must serve at least 38 years before he's eligible for parole.
