Optimism turned into panic in about three hours Saturday night for Sooner Nation. Bob Stoops told me after the game "it doesnt feel like we won." I think there are a lot of people echoing that sentiment after a 31-24 much closer than expected victory over Utah State.

Merv Johnson says that this Utah State team is better than the BYU team that beat OU last year in Dallas to start the year. Wow. Time will tell I guess. Their quarterback Diondre Borel does appear to be pretty special. The Sooners couldnt get ahold of the slippery Aggie QB all night. But....it is Utah State!

The Sooner sideline went from anticipation to frustration somewhere in the middle of the 2nd quarter Saturday night. And it seemed to start on the drive in which Tom Wort picked up two personal fouls to allow Utah State to put their first three points on the board. From that point on, the Aggies played with confidence and the Sooners played hesitantly.

Landry Jones looked like the Landry Jones that played on the road last year. The offensive line didnt create as many big holes as youd expect against a team like Utah State. The tight end pass game was non-existent. Defensive backs were continuously beaten deep. It was TCU, BYU season opener deja vu all over again.

Brent Venables has to have less confidence in Jamell Fleming and Demontre Hurst at cornerback than he had before Saturday night. Florida States Christian Ponder has to be licking his chops. The good news for the OU defense I thought was the play of true freshman Tony Jefferson. He seemed to consistently be around the ball.

On the bright side, unlike TCU and BYU...its a win. Ugly...but a win. There have been plenty of seasons that have started slow and finished strong. The tricky thing now is with so much to work on can you get your stuff together before the Seminoles get to town next Saturday afternoon. And, it doesnt appear there were any significant injuries. And maybe now with a week of everyone telling them now how bad they are, youll see a different OU team against Florida State?
