OKLAHOMA CITY -- Troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol had a busy 4th of July weekend. They assisted 475 people on the roadways and investigated 199 accidents.
Twenty-eight of those accidents were alcohol related. Troopers issued in total 751 speeding citations, 547 safety belt citations, and jailed 119 drivers for Driving Under the Influence.
While the preliminary numbers add up to 5 fatalities, and 1 drowning, it does look like an overall reduction from 2010 when authorities reported 10 traffic related deaths, and zero drownings.
"It was an extremely hot holiday weekend and our troopers stayed super busy assisting the public, and keeping the roads, and waterways safe", said Captain Chris West, spokesman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
