OKLAHOMA CITY -- Del City High School students are remembering and honoring a beloved teacher killed during an apparent murder-suicide in her southeast Oklahoma City home.

Police found the bodies of Katherine Lopez, 54, and her husband Jose Lopez, 64, on Thursday, September 1. She was a teacher at Del City High School. He taught at Kerr Middle School. When neither one showed up for work Thursday morning, their employers called police.

When officers arrived at the home in the 5100 block of Eden Drive, they found the couple deceased inside the house. Investigators say it appears Jose Lopez shot his wife then killed himself. Court records show Katherine Lopez filed for divorce a week before the shootings.

In Mrs. Lopez's honor, students at Del City High School will wear green ribbons at school and during Friday night's football game, a match-up against the school's longtime and biggest rival, Midwest City High School. But the students will be thinking about more than football. They'll be remembering Mrs. Lopez and her dedication to her students.

"She was a really nice teacher," said Mylishia Gipson, who had Katherine Lopez as a Physical Science teacher when she was a freshman. "She always had a smile on her face. Her husband was also nice! It is so sad."

There was a moment of silence in a pep rally before Friday night's football game to remember both teachers. Counselors have also been on hand at both the high school and the middle school to help students and staff deal with the loss.
