Jones Man Charged With Bigamy

A woman says when she filed for divorce, she discovered her husband was also married to someone else.

Theresa Smith of Jones married Michael Smith in August 1982. She says she suspected the 48 year old had been having an affair, so she filed for divorce in September.

Mrs. Smith says she discovered after she filed for divorce that her husband had married Nataliya Mamedova on November 27, 2005. Mrs. Smith says she and her husband had never divorced, so she called police and filed a report.

According to court documents, an officer contacted Mr. Smith, who told police to speak with his attorney. The lawyer said his client did not want to make any comments on the case. The officer informed the attorney he would pursue bigamy charges against his client. Mrs. Smith later told the officer she would cooperate fully with the investigation.

In November, Oklahoma County prosecutors charged Michael Smith with bigamy.
