A former Red Cross employee in Oklahoma City is facing accusations of embezzling $59,000.
According to a police report released on Friday, the Red Cross employee had access to a company credit card. The employee hid credit card transactions for three years by having the statements sent to a home address, instead of the company.
The Red Cross fired the employee last August. The agency said it is working with police in this investigation.
Janienne Bella, Chief Executive Officer of the Red Cross, released the following statement regarding this issue:
"The American Red Cross recently uncovered possible financial irregularities at its Oklahoma City office. Our preliminary findings have been handed over to the Oklahoma City Police Department for investigation. The individual in this case is no longer with or working for the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross has procedures in place to detect and investigate allegations of fraud and waste. This case reinforces the importance of having such policies. The American Red Cross continues to work with Oklahoma City police on this investigation and sincerely appreciates the police department's quick response and attention to this case."
Police have not released the name of the employee at this point.
