Grady County Sheriff-Elect Jim Weir plans to start the new job by looking at old cases.

"We are ready to hit the ground running," said Weir.

Weir said a lot of cases in the Grady County went under-investigated and complaints from crime victims prompted him to make it a priority when he takes office.

"That's one of  our big jobs we are going to do right at the beginning is reassigning old cases and having to reinvestigate them to make sure that we have done everything we can to protect the public."

Weir is also implementing a new program to better protect schools in Grady County.

"My plan is to adding deputies to float to schools and act as a school resource officer, especially in light of the shooting in Connecticut."

Weir also calls attention to the need for better response times. He specifically pointed out issues with a deadly home invasion in Blanchard on New Year's Eve last year.

"There was a little disagreement about who has jurisdiction where the home invasion was happening."

The victim claimed it took more than 20 minutes before officers showed up at her house where two men were trying to break in. The victim shot and killed one intruder.

Weir says that could be avoided in the future with his plans to share jurisdiction with municipalities in the county until a deputy can get to the scene.

The sheriff-elect says he notified at least five deputies that will be replaced when he takes office. This comes after a board interviewed the deputies and made the decision to replace some of the staff. Weir says it all in an effort reach one goal.

"Protect the public and get any violators who are still running around out there brought to justice."
