What a critical portion of Oklahoma City's Boulevard project will look like has been decided.
After hours of debate Tuesday, OKC City Council decided on part of the plan for its future marquee street going into Downtown.
Alternative A was voted through by City Council, by a vote of 7 to 2. It calls for a single bridge to go over Western near Classen, and Reno.
Many did not want to see any elevated aspect to the Boulevard because they thought it would divide the city like old I-40 crosstown.
"We came up with a solution that's good if you want to be an average city," said Councilman Ed Shadid, who was one of two votes against the adopted plan.
Shadid believes the option of incorporating a grid system by improving existing streets and building part of the Boulevard outside the I-40 footprint would have worked best.
"It's important to keep the traffic moving freely," said Mayor Mick Cornett, who called the adopted plan a good compromise.
Supporters of alternative A say it will move traffic but still provide a two-mile area where the speed limit drops to 25 miles per hour at some points.
The area will provide a location for future business development and wide sidewalks for pedestrians.
