Park Ranger In Atoka County Shoots Suspect Who Tried To Run Him Down

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says a man who attempted to run over a park ranger at McGee State Park was shot and killed Saturday night.

The Atoka County Sheriff’s Office says 30-year-old David Maher of New York was acting strangely and causing a disturbance at the park on May 4. Campers complained to a park ranger.

The ranger attempted to speak with Maher and get information from him, but Maher would not cooperate. The ranger said Maher ran from the area to parking lot. He got into his vehicle and attempted to run over the ranger.

The ranger pulled his weapon and shot at Maher, striking him at least once. Maher was taken to the Atoka County Medical Center where he died.

The Atoka County Sheriff's Office asked the OSBI to assist with the officer-involved shooting.
