Two people were killed after the vehicle they were in crashed in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, Saturday evening.

It happened at about 7:20 p.m. on Interstate 40 westbound, mile marker 313, about two miles east of Sallisaw.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a 2002 GMC Yukon SUV driven by 59-year-old Earnest Poindexter was westbound on I-40 when it ran off the roadway to the right for an unknown reason. Poindexter overcorrected. The SUV traveled back across the highway and entered a broad slide.

The SUV eventually ran off the highway again to the left. It rolled two times and struck a traffic sign.

The front passenger and left rear passenger, later identified as 55-year-old Ira Poindexter and 58-year-old Betty Gene Poindexter, were not wearing seat belts and were both thrown out of the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and another two passengers received minor injuries. They were treated and released.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
