A resident trying to keep warm ended up sparking a fire that forced some people out of their northwest Oklahoma City apartments.
Just after midnight Monday, firefighters rushed to Lakestone Apartments at N.W. 50th Street and Independence. A man lit a fire in his fireplace and then went to bed. He was awakened a few hours later when smoke began filling his apartment.
Firefighters briefly evacuated the apartment building while they knocked out the fire. Crews managed to contain the flames to one unit, and residents were soon allowed back into their apartments.
No one was hurt.
Firefighters say with the cold weather, they've been seeing a lot of fires such as this one. They urge residents to make sure their fireplaces are properly maintained and used.
