Police arrested a man who is accused of raping and attacking a woman in an alley near the City Rescue Mission in downtown Oklahoma City.
According to police, officers responded to a rape report at about 3:20 p.m. Friday, May 16 at the City Rescue Mission, located at 800 W. California. A woman told police she was raped by a man she did not know behind a building across the street.
The woman said she had been staying at the Women's Shelter at the City Rescue Mission until she got into an argument with someone else. So she decided to leave and stay with her friend in his truck across the street on Thursday night.
At about 1:30 a.m. Friday, the woman said a man, later identified as 49-year-old Carl Edward Nero, opened her door and began choking her. The victim said Nero appeared to be under the influence of drugs. He accused her of stealing jewelry and abusing a child.
Nero told the victim that he had consumed a combination of heroin and cocaine, according to the police report.
The victim said she believed Nero mistook her for another woman. Nero reportedly pulled the victim out of the vehicle. He then dragged her to an alley behind a building, located at 905 W. California, and raped her.
The victim said during the attack, her friend and several other people in the area did not come to her aid.
The victim told police that Nero trapped her between him and a wall as he fell asleep. When he woke up, he allowed her to leave, but told her he would kill her if she called police.
The victim reported the incident to the staff at the Rescue Mission, who then contacted police. Officers took Nero into custody. He has been booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on charges of rape and assault with intent to commit a felony.
Nero reportedly told police his encounter with the victim was consensual.
