The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspects in Saturday's deputy-involved shooting in Norman.

Investigators have identified the man who died following the deputy-involved shooting as 27-year-old Nicholas Popplewell of Norman.

According to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Spokesperson, Meghan McCormick, a deputy stopped a GMC Yukon for a traffic violation near the intersection of 24th Avenue S.W. and Boyd Street, Saturday afternoon. Two men, including Popplewell and 36-year-old Christopher Mormann, were inside the SUV. K-9 arrived at the traffic stop to help.

McCormick said Mormann admitted to deputies that there were drugs and a gun inside of the vehicle. When deputies began searching the vehicle, Popplewell ran to the K-9 deputy's patrol car and got inside.

One deputy ran after Popplewell and tried to get him out of the patrol car. Popplewell attempted to run over the deputy, and he was dragged for a short distance. The other deputy on scene shot at Popplewell.

Popplewell was taken to a Norman hospital, where he later died. One officer was treated for minor injuries, and both are currently on paid administrative leave, according to authorities.

Detectives have confirmed that Popplewell had an outstanding felony warrant out of McClain County for first-degree robbery and aggravated assault and battery.

Mormann was arrested on drug complaints and booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center, but he bonded out of jail Saturday afternoon.

The names of the deputies involved have not been released at this time, and McCormick said the investigation is ongoing.
