Rhea is accused of shooting at officers, injuring two, when they responded to a hostage call at the Plaza Inn Motel near S.E. 29th and I-35.

Prosecutors allege Rhea opened fire on the officers. One man inside the hotel room was also hit by gunfire.

“I just heard pop, pop, pop,” said Justin Hanna.

He gave the first account of what happened when Rhea allegedly fired shots at officers, injuring two of them.

Hanna and 72 others are now listed as witnesses in the state's case against Rhea. Several watched what happened after the initial gunfire.

Rhea fled the room holding Samantha Monden hostage as he ran along the east service road of I-35. He allegedly entered the interstate and tried to carjack a couple traveling northbound.
