My 2 Cents: OCPD Pamphlets On Behavior During Police Encounter

It is a sign of the times, but sadly necessary I suppose.

The Oklahoma City Police Department is distributing a pamphlet on how to behave if you encounter a police officer.

It use to be simple... when you come in contact with a police officer, you do what they say.

Unfortunately, an unrealistic distrust of police officers is being fostered by some protesters, even some public officials, which is disgraceful.

Yes, there are a few bad police, but I've watched and covered our officers for years and they do an amazing job.

They spend a big part of their days trying to diffuse confrontations, and they're darn good at it. They're not trying to stir up trouble.

It's insulting that I even have to say that.

These pamphlets the city police department has printed, including a Spanish version, include things like if you're stopped by an officer, don't run, don't lie, and officers do have the right to pat search you for weapons.

Why aren't parents teaching their children this respect for law enforcement and respect for their authority? Why aren't the schools, for that matter?

It seems ridiculous that we need pamphlets explaining all this to adults, for crying out loud, but I guess that's where we are.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
