Nearly a year after the death of a metro toddler, his mother is charged with abuse.

The boy died after choking but doctors say his body showed signs of abuse.

On February 13, 2014, emergency crews responded to a home at 5929 S. Frances Ave. in reference to a two-year-old not breathing due to choking on cheerios. Upon arrival, EMSA transported the child to a local hospital where he later was pronounced dead.

When detectives arrived at the hospital to observe the child, they saw several visible signs of injury. Those injuries included bruises behind both ears and to the chin, bite marks on the lips, abrasions to the forehead and foreskin, and scratches on the face.

The mother, Sasha Cano, of Oklahoma City, told authorities that the injuries were due to her son falling off the bed. And when asked about other markings, she said they were forms of rashes.

The medical examiner's report in reference to the investigation said the cause of death was complications of pneumonia, but the child's body showed significant signs of physical neglect and possible abuse.

Court documents also show the child's siblings said their mother would hit the boy and even throw him on a bed, causing him to fall.
