There is a major consumer alert for parents.

It's been a year full of hack attacks, from major retailers to the cheating website Ashley Madison. But the latest hack hits the most vulnerable -- our children.

V-Tech admits its learning lodge app store was hacked last week. “Motherboard," which first reported the hack, calls this is one of the largest known consumer data breaches.

We're told anywhere between 200,000 to 300,000 children and nearly four million parents are affected. So what do moms and dads need to know?

"One thing they need to understand anything they've given V-Tech has been compromised," said Troy Hunt, Security Expert.

Security experts said that includes not only names, home addresses, and birth dates stolen, but also photos of some children.

V-Tech is assuring customers that social security and credit card numbers were not included in the breach. It also said it has taken steps to stop any future attacks.

So how can you protect you and your family in cyber space? First, ask about the website or app's security measures before registering your information. See if the company uses encrypted connections.

Also, it may be a good idea to think twice about allowing kids to play with Internet-connected toys.
