Crucial DNA evidence was presented in the Daniel Holtzclaw's trial Wednesday. That evidence could convince a jury that the former Oklahoma City Police Officer did sexually assault at least two women while on the job.
A total of 13 women have testified that it happened to them, and Wednesday the officer broke down in tears in court.
It was the first real show of emotion by Daniel Holtzclaw and it happened right at the end.
Most of the testimony was all about science and physical proof - as the jury heard from a forensic analyst about DNA evidence found on Daniel Holtzclaw's police uniform, more specifically the DNA found both inside and outside his uniform pants.
The jury was shown a DNA test chart and the analyst explained that she personally swabbed those uniform pants. She testified that she found a mixture of DNA from at least two people and the results revealed it was female DNA.
Besides finding a partial DNA match from the first alleged victim who testified, the analyst testified a full female DNA profile was also recovered, and that it perfectly matched the DNA taken from the 13th accuser.
That accuser testified she was only 17 when Holtzclaw raped her inside her mother's home.
During cross examination, Holtzclaw's attorney did get the analyst to admit that it was possible that DNA could have come from secondary contact with Daniel Holtzclaw's hands just touching the teenager's arm during the course of his duties as a police officer. He also got her to testify that none of the DNA collected matched the profiles of the other alleged victims, and the female DNA collected also did not match the DNA collected from Holtzclaw's own girlfriend.
The state has wrapped up its case, and the defense only called one witness, Daniel Holtzclaw's ex-girlfriend who had to reveal intimate details about their relationship. And it was during her testimony that Daniel Holtzclaw broke down.
Daniel Holtzclaw faces a total of 36 felony counts. He is not expected to testify in his defense.
