A pivotal season in Stillwater took another step in the wrong direction on Wednesday.
Oklahoma State fell at home to Tulsa, 66-56, and lost its second game of the season to an unranked mid-major opponent.
Coach Travis Ford has come under fire for perceived underachievement in recent seasons and this won’t help. OSU shot just 29.1 percent as a team and 2-of-19 (10.5 percent) from downtown. Freshman guard Jawun Evans led OSU with 11 points and was the only Cowboy to score in double figures.
The Tulsa bench outscored OSU’s bench 26-16 while only two of the five Cowboy reserves scored. Chris Olivier and Leyton Hammonds scored eight a piece, but combined to shoot just 4 of 18.
James Woodard led TU with 15 points and six rebounds while Shaq Harrison added 14 points. Marquel Curtis played well off the Tulsa bench, scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds.
OSU (5-2) hung around thanks to its stellar free-throw shooting. The Pokes hit 22-of-25 (88 percent) to help make up for their offensive deficiencies. The Cowboys host Missouri State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Tulsa (5-2) can add this to its win over then-No. 9 Wichita State and is putting together a nice nonconference resume. The Golden Hurricane host crosstown rival Oral Roberts on Saturday at 3 p.m.
This was TU’s first win in Stillwater since 1985.
