One of the linchpins of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, in fact, I would argue the reason his campaign really caught fire, was his promise to build a wall to protect our southern border, and that he would MAKE Mexico pay for it.
If you were wondering HOW he was going to do that, today he's putting out some of his ideas.
Chief among them cutting off remittance payments from here to Mexico.
Meaning the billions of dollars that immigrants in the U.S. send south of the border.
They might be illegal immigrants who've come here, found work and they're sending money back to support family members in Mexico.
That would require Western Union and the banks cutting off the wire transfers.
Could a President Trump actually do that?
President Obama responded to the plan Tuesday, saying, "good luck with that."
But Trump believes he could do it by tweaking the Patriot Act's requirements on banks.
He says another option is to cancel U.S. visa's granted to high-powered Mexican businessmen, presumably to bring the Mexican government around to the idea of paying for the 1,000 mile wall.
Supporters think it'll work, opponents say it would damage the Mexican economy and mean even more illegal immigrants would sneak into the U.S. looking for work.
