It’s hard to find comparisons to Russell Westbrook from NBA bygones because so few humans in Earth’s history have been as athletic as the Thunder’s 6-foot-3 point guard.

Two weeks ago in an introduction video for the Air Jordan XXX1 shoes, Michael Jordan gave Russell Westbrook one of the rarest and greatest compliments, even if it wasn’t in-person.

“Thirty years ago, that’s me,” Jordan said of Westbrook, first published by Complex Sports. “The attitude, trying to prove myself, showing so much passion for the game of basketball. You see it in his play. You can tell he loves the game, he plays with energy and flair.”

With Kevin Durant now in Golden State and Westbrook re-signing in OKC for an additional two years, the five-time All Star will be free to crank out a Jordan-esque stat line this season. Westbrook thrives with a chip on his shoulder and Durant’s departure has given him just that.
