Police found a burglar held at gunpoint by a homeowner in northwest Oklahoma City.

Police were called about 1:15 p.m. Friday to the 4000 block of Stonebridge Circle near Lake Overholser.

The homeowner said he was working in his home office when he heard the open door alarm go off. He later saw the handle on the door to the garage begin to twist. He said he ran to the door, shut it and locked it before he ran and retrieved his weapon from another room.

The homeowner said he went back into the garage in hopes of scaring the intruder away.

He told police he saw a man run into the backyard and the homeowner caught up with the man. He made the man belly-crawl to the front driveway.

While they were at the front driveway, the homeowner said the burglar tried to get up on his hands and the homeowner accidentally fired one round into the grass away from the burglar, according to the incident report.

A neighbor called police after the gun was fired.

Jared Bennett, 44, was arrested on a burglary complaint and was taken to the Oklahoma County jail.
